Travelling in Africa

Weather When Travelling in Africa

It is always a good idea to be aware of the climate in a county before you travel there. You will then know exactly what to pack in your case.

With Africa being such an enormous continent then there van be quite different climates depending on where you decide to stay. The continent is pretty much on the equator and therefore you should expect most of it to be pretty hot. Obviously it will be dependent on the time of year that you visit. Some of the northern locations such as the Mediterranean coast and Northern Morocco as well as South Africa tends to be on the cooler side with temperatures ranging from ten degrees to the mid thirties.

Places which tend to be right on the equator such as Mauritius and Cape Verde will be between fifteen and thirty five during the year, so always pleasant. The desert regions such as the Horn of Africa and Sahel will be even hotter which can be over forty degrees and even over fifty in the Sahara, however they can drop to fifteen degrees at night because of the fact that sand does not retain heat. This means that although if you are staying in the hotter regions you will want to pack cool clothes or light cover up garments to stop the sun burning, you may need something a bit warmer for night time if you are in desert regions.

There are some areas where you will need to wrap up warm all of the time though. Some of the mountains and higher areas such as the Atlas Mountains or Lesotho as well as the top of Mount Kilimanjaro with often get snow in the winter and therefore you will need to take winter clothes. There are also some peaks which will require you to wear a jacket to keep warm, these are places such as the Canary Islands, Mount Cameroon and the Reunion.

Another main weather factor is the monsoon season which can change form country to country and you will need to be aware of the fact that there are often local floods making roads impassable and so if you are visiting between March or June then make sure that you check when it is in the country you plan to visit.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro

If you are travelling in Tanzania in Africa then it is well worth visiting Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a volcano but as it is currently inactive it is safe to go and visit it.

It stands at 19,340 feet above sea level and is therefore extremely impressive. It is a fairly easy mountain to climb which is why it attracts many climbers and trekkers. What makes it look so impressive is that it is often snow capped despite the fact that it looks over the plains of the savannah. Sadly the snowy peaks are not so common as they once were.

If you do not want to climb right to the top, there are a selection of low peaks which can be reached more easily. Due to the height of the mountain it boasts a massive selection of plants and animals. The base is warm with bushland and the top is icy and cold. In between there are tropical rain forests, evergreen forests, alpine desert regions and moorlands.

This means that even if you do not want to climb the mountain at all, there is still plenty to look at. However, the climb probably only takes a few days and you will see so much of a contrast in plant life that it can be quite amazing. If you do choose to climb then you will need to have a licensed guide with you and you will need to pay entry to the park. You will also need to have enough money to pay tips to the guide and the porters and cooks who will climb with you and you will have to pay for camping or huts.

There are six different routes that you an take and each takes between five and seven days. You will need to choose which one you want to do, some are prettier, some are more remote and they take in different sides of the mountain.

Zambia–A Safari Vacation to Remember

When it comes to an African safari, every person has their own set of expectations. There are some people who look forward to world-class accommodations complete with spa treatments and room services and others who only wish to become immersed in the African bush. Although either type of African vacation is wonderful, a true-to-form safari will provide you with a one of a kind vacation experience.

The History of Walking Safaris

The concept of a walking safari is credited to Norman Carr and his experiences in South Luangwa of Zambia that occurred approximately fifty years ago. The legacy Carr left behind is in part a selection of quality “bush camps.” These camps are generally smaller than the traditional safari lodges, meaning they only accommodate 6-10 people at any given time. The design of these bush camps is made complete with a smattering of thatched cottages that lie along the Luangwa River.

Safari Safety

In order to have a safe Zambia safari, you will need to secure a guide who possesses a great deal of sensory perception and concentration. You are not vacationing in a theme park; an authentic Zambia walking safari means you will be in near proximity to many wild animals without the added safety that a vehicle provides.

The National Parks of Zambia

The national parks of Zambia are well-established and open during the country’s dry season from May to October. South Luangwa does not disappoint in terms of game viewing. Animals you may spot include herds of elephants and buffalo in mating season, lions that are busy defending their territory from competition, and leopards in their own habitat. Other animal species that are native to Zambia are various antelope species, the Cookson’s Wildebeest, and the Thorneycroft’s Giraffe.

Hippopotamuses are also seen in high concentrations along the Luangwa River, especially when Zambia is in full swing of its dry season, which causes the river to shrink. Many times groups of hippos will total to several hundred in one location. The safari tour will in most cases provide concealed areas where you can take pictures and observe hippopotamuses in the wild.

Traveling to Zambia

Zambia can easily be accessed via a direct flight originating from the UK that flies to the capital of Zambia, which is Lusaka. After a short flight, you will arrive in Mfuwe–a small town that acts as an entrance to the bush camps of South Luangwa. When you finally reach your destination, the beauty of Zambia and its untouched wilderness will take your breath away.

Even though you may be eager to get your Zambia safari underway, take the time to first discuss the safari with a person who has traveled to the region. They can give you an unbiased view as to choosing the right kind of camp for you because some of them have a more rustic feel than others.
